Marshall was a small town in southwestern Missouri at the time of the American Civil War. It was located on the east bank of the James River, about 16 miles north of Springfield. The town was founded by Isaac Berry and his brother-in-law,[1] Joseph Williamson, in 1838. The peach orchard owned by Berry became a leading agricultural center of Marshall during the 1840s and 1850s. In 1852, Marshall's first school was built; it served as a one-room building until 1870. During that year, also, Marshall's first general store opened its doors. The store operated for fifty years before closing its doors in 1893. This business is now known as Smith's General Store. From 1868 to 1865, Marshalls' only doctor was Drury Hodge; after that time, medical care began to be provided through local subscription institutions like Rush University Medical School.[2] In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Missouri during the American Civil War,[3] Marshall voted against secession but later supported Union causes. It lost most of its resident population when the war ended two years later, but continued to exist as a small community until 1991 when it merged into nearby Dixon Township.[4] At present (2018), there are no remaining residents living in Marshalls'.
