The population was 21,701 as of the 2010 census. The land that became Marshall was first settled by farmers who arrived in 1836 from Kentucky and Tennessee. By 1840, several small villages had been established around what is now Marshalltown. In 1845, two men named John Sitton and James Wahlgren bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land east of present-day Marshall for $20 per acre. They named their new settlement "Marshall" after General James A. Garfield's birthplace on Long Island, New York. In 1907, the city of Marshall merged with the surrounding towns to form a single municipality under the name of "Marshall". At that time, the population totaled 20,701 people; however, since 2000 there has been an annual growth rate of only 2%. The history of Marshalls rich economy can be traced back to its early days as a farming community. Today's businesses include agricultural production such as corn planting and haymaking; manufacturing sectors including furniture and auto parts;and tourism with its own attractions such as historical sites and golf courses.
