The first settler in Marshall was John Prentice and his family in 1837. They were followed by other families over the next few years until all but one of the original settlers had left by 1840. The remaining pioneer families built log homes on farms around what is now Marshalltown and began to raise crops and livestock. In 1851, they formed the first school board in Marshall County and started teaching school there to help support their families while they built new homes. By 1870, most of present-day Marshall had been developed as a farming community with Several businesses including a tannery and post office were opened during that decade offering services such as transportation for goods to local customers or mail delivery for residents. railroads reached Marshall county in 1875 when the Missouri Central Railroad routed through it from St Louis via Hannibal, Missouri becoming an important artery for commerce throughout central Missouri In 1906, Marshal became home to world's first municipal golf course when Joplin Municipal Golf Course was dedicated adjacent to modern day Joplin High School which still stands today thanks to donations from several prominent citizens including Mayor Harry Pleasants The townspeople decided that golf would be an important part of their community life and soon organized themselves into two committees - one designed specifically to promote golfing opportunities within the town limits while another committee looked into park development possibilities Marshall enjoyed its heyday during World War I due largely to military recruitment efforts conducted by various businesses including Hutton's Lumber Company which donated land for training facilities . During World War II many businesses closed down due to lack of war demand but many reopened after hostilities ended . Afterward much optimism returned among locals with plans announced for building new civic institutions such as a library, high school and even a hospital However these plans never came about due mainly because no money could be raised from taxes or pledges made from individuals or business owners
