Marshall, Missouri is located in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The town was founded in 1827 by Isaac Marshall and his wife Rebecca. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who served as a U.S. Minister to Mexico City during the Mexican-American War and then served as President of the United States from 1845 to 1849. It grew rapidly after it was designated as a center for trade with Kansas and Illinois because of its strategic location on the Arkansas River between those states and Texas. In 1861, Marshall became an early adopter of military drills that would later become known as "The Marching Morale." On April 14, 1861, Marshal's brigade participated in the first battle of Kansas City when Confederate forces attacked Union troops there. That battle led to the death of more than 60 Union soldiers and one officer; Confederate losses were much greater at this point. After the Civil War ended, Marshall reverted to his earlier name and business practices while Kansas City transitioned back into a Union city under Democratic rule. In 1865, he donated land to form what is now Park Hill Cemetery in memory of his late wife Rebecca and their three children: Samuel (1825-1910), Alice (1827-1893), and Edwin (1829-1896). From 1888 until 1922, Marshall was also mayor of Kansas City. He retired from office after serving two terms but continued to live inKansas City until his death in 1942 at age 90 years old. During his time as mayor, he helped develop several important landmarks including Municipal Court Building #1 which still stands today; Independence Hall which housed the city’s first library; First National Bank building which remains active today; Market Street Bridge which connected downtown Kansas City with Spanishtown on the east side;and finally Kemper Place Stadium where professional football games were played from 1933 through 1951.]
