It is located on the southern edge of the city of St. Louis and is bordered by Interstate 44 to the north, Old Route 66 to the east, and rural surroundings to the south. The first settler in Marshall was Isaac Reed in 1814. A post office called Marshall been established in 1827 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The community name originated from General Winfield Scott's order for all Union soldiers not named "Washington" to march through central Missouri under his command on October 25, 1812. The men marched from ballgame field near present-day Carthage (now part of St., Louis) upriver to Enterprise where they camped for three nights before continuing their journey northward along I-44 on October 26th into Jackson County. On November 1st they reachedpresent-dayStLouis where they stopped for lunch at a farmhouse belonging to Amos Kendall before continuing their march northeastward past Marshall on November 3rd arrived at Poplar Bluff Springs onNovember 5th after spending two days marching over snowdrifts and through narrow valleys along the way On November 8th members of General Ulysses S Grant's army reached Marshall while General Tecumseh Sherman's army passed by just east of it on their way downriver en route to Springfield, Illinois Marshall had a school starting in 1828 which taught reading and writing as well as agriculture A cotton gin was built around 1830 which processed cottonseed kernels into textiles A flour mill was built around 1840 which ground cornmeal into flour An sawmill started operations around 1850 A gristmill began operations around 1870 which ground lignite coal into flour .A potato factory started operating about 1880 with potatoes being grown for local consumption only during early years but this changed about 1900 when baking soda became available The last business active within town limits closed its doors about 1984
Marshall County was organized on March 4, 1836, from parts of Caldwell and Polk counties. The county seat was Marshall. The first courthouse was built in Marshall in 1838. It burned down in 1840. A new courthouse was built in 1851 and it burned down in 1862. A new courthouse was built in 1904 and it burned down in 1908.
