After the war, many Confederate veterans returned to find their homes burned down or looted; this reinforced Union support for Reconstruction policies aimed at restoring order and rebuilding society after the war's devastation. In 1865, Joshua Giddings founded Giddings-Garrett Paper Company on a plantation south of Marshall near Paintsville with $5 000 he had won as a prize in a state lottery run by Governor Thomas Bickerton (D). Giddings became one of America's leading paper manufacturers and his company became known around the world for its quality papers products such as cash registers and checkbook covers. Marshall is a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,831 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Captain John Marshall and his family on December 21, 1837. The first store in Marshall was established by Capt. Marshall and his brother-in-law Tom Clements. The town started as a small agricultural community with just 10 homes and 2 stores when it was platted in 1839. By 1845, the population had grown to over 100 people and the name of the town changed to honor General George Washington Marshall (1779–1846). The first post office opened in 1840, and the first school opened in 1840 also. In addition to its role as a stop on stagecoach routes from St Louis to Hannibal and Independence, Marshall served as an important military depot during the Mexican–American War (1846–48), due to its location near Mexico City. After Missouri's admission into the Union on August 15, 1861, Marshal became an important county seat for Clay County. However, because of continuing Confederate activity around Fort Donelson (now Jackson Heights) in neighboring Wilson County, Marshal declined offers from other counties to become part of Confederate Missouri until 1865. When Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th that year, all but three of Marshalls' homes were burned down; only two remain standing today within easy reach of each other across what used to be a large open field now filled with rubble from destroyed buildings dating back more than 200 years ago!
