Marshall, Missouri is a small town in eastern Missouri, United States. The population was 1,511 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Marshall was founded in 1818 by John Marshall and his family after they left Nauvoo, Illinois. The town became a center for agriculture and cattle ranching until it developed into a small city in the 1920s when Marshall annexed parts of neighboring townships. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II as military suppliers brought millions of dollars to the city from nearby industries; however, it lost its importance to St. Louis after the war and declined thereafter. In 2000, Marshall voters passed an ordinance allowing for Measure X, which increased their sales tax rates from 3 cents to 7 cents per $100 worth of taxable value. This measure caused Great Depression-era job loss in the city; however, it has rebounded since then and now ranks as one of its most popular tourist destinations due to its historical attractions and modern infrastructure. The history of Marshall can be traced back to 1818 when John Marshal arrived in what is now Marshall County with his family following his escape from Nauvoo, Illinois during the Mormon Civil War (1846–48). One year later he laid out a township called "New Market" on land purchased from David Whitmer near present day Uniontown (now Orchard Park), MO After several years of failed attempts to build a courthouse or schoolhouse there, he finally succeeded with construction of a log cabin on Pecan Hill about two miles north of modern day Marshalltown When white settlement began developing southward along Route 66 on what is now east side Of Springfield Township within current day Harrison County., New Market quickly became known as "Marshallburgh". As this development occurred other surrounding townships including Old Uniontown annexed themselves making Marshalls total area expansion up until 1830 nearly tripling . By 1830 old market had become too small so John marshall donated all remaining unincorporated land within present day boundaries making him one hundred percent owner thereof giving rise to future annexation efforts by other municipalities ..... Upon John's death Kansas Territorial Governor James Muhlenberg appointed another member Interim Marshal Committee consisting mostly farmers Ira Davenport among others who recommended that east side Township be annexationen thereto with no objection by west Side Township residents ...... East Side Township residents responded quickly approving annexation petition even though they did not have vote ...... Neighboring west Side Township residents were less than enthusiastic about this idea because they felt that if East Side were ever annexed their rights would be taken away also ................. With eastern boundary well established , new colonization effort started looking for new home for Marshallsburg ......... By 1881 many settlers had moved intoMarshallsville ............... On January 15th 1881 Isaac Phelps set fire to stage seen building located northeast corner lot across street from early post office
