Marshall is a town in northern Marshall County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first recorded sighting of a gun in Marshall was on November 7, 1836 when Samuel Baldwin and John Cramer used their rifle to shoot a deer off of a hill in what is now downtown Marshall. The first written description of a gunsight was given by Captain James Burt on July 24, 1792 while he was commanding an expedition against the Osage Indians. He described using his “long-barreled shotgun with its sights set upon the buffalo” to kill them without involving himself or any other members of his unit. The first permanent settler in Marshall County was Solomon Kimball who arrived in 1839 and platted the town site around present day Marshall University Boulevard and Western Avenue. A post office called Kimball until 1878 when it became known as Union City and remained so until 1907 when it changed its name to Marshall due to pressure from surrounding towns which had also changed their names after being incorporation into larger communities during that time period. In 1840, Chauncey Hinkle purchased land east of present day Union City from Jeptha White for $150 but never built anything on it because he died two years later from cholera contracted while traveling through Porter County near Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1841 Hinkle's brother Amos bought some adjacent land from Hinkle for $30 which formed the nucleus for today's north side of town along Wabash River just east of Interstate 44/ US 71 junction where most stores are located today including Subway and Papa John’s Pizza
