When the dam was completed, residents of Wichita Falls began to move upstream to what would become Marshall. In 1934, Marshal became one of two cities in Missouri to join the newly formed St Louis-St Genevieve Metropolitan Area (later renamed Missouri). At that time, it had a population of just over 100 people and was home to only one small grocery store and one hotel.

In 1860, Robert Smedley bought land adjoining present-day West Main Street for $1,000 and began developing it into a town center called Smedleyville. Development continued through 1870 when he donated all or part of three blocks north of present day East Main Street to become the nucleus for modern-day Marshalltown which became fully incorporated as a city on December 1, 1893. In 1865, Wm Ewing organized two local banks together with $5 from each bank's president - this resulted in creation of "the First National Bank" which still operates as an independentlyowned bank today. On November 15th 1890 Marshaltown residents voted to form their own incorporation as a citywide body with its own Board of Alderman.Stroud 1990 This gaveMarshall status as one more municipality within the expanding St Louis metropolitan area.

The first settlement in Marshall was by two brothers named George and Nicholas Marshall who arrived on horseback from Illinois in 1827. They built a log cabin on the site that still stands today. In 1836, George Marshall Jr., along with his father and brother John erected the first cotton gin in what would become Marshall. In 1837, James Wirt Davidson founded a sawmill and grist mill in nearby Pawnee Grove which he operated until 1840 when it burned down due to rustling cattle by Indians. In 1841, Elijah Bogue established a grocery store and post office here which continued until 1865 when it was closed due to lack of business opportunities. A school was opened in 1863 by Rev Jno Henshaw (1810-1875). It became known as Union High School before changing its name to Marshall University after becoming an accredited university in 1928. In 1907, a water tower was completed here which continues to serve as a community icon today. Marshall also homeported the USS Iowa off of Naval Base Kansas City from 1911-1912 during World War I while other vessels docked there including USS Nebraska (BB-64) and USS Arkansas (BB-38).
