The mining boom that followed World War I led to increased demand for coal in Marshall; by 1920, there were six mines open for production with a total capacity of 2 million tons per year! A great fire burned down most of downtown Marshall in 1922 but didn't cause any serious damage as brick buildings used straw cockpits as smoke detectors became common during this time! In 1951,[1] when Truman Capote wrote In Cold Blood,[2] he spent several days living among local farmers near present day Gouda Junction before filming his opening scene there.[3] Many people think that In Cold Blood's Setting was inspired by real life events around here such as this fire which destroyed much evidence – including historical bricks from downtown Marshall – but no charges have ever been filed against anyone for libel or slander yet!
