They reached the site of present-day Marshall on March 3 and purchased 380 acres for $100 per acre. On April 10, 1836, the townsite was named after General James K. Polk who served as United States Secretary of War under President Andrew Johnson during the civil rights movement in America. Marshall quickly became an important trading center due to its location at the crossroads of two major trails that crossed over into Missouri: the Santa Fe Trail and the Fayetteville Road/Kansas City Railroad corridor. The local salt mines played a significant role in early Marshall development and continue to be used today as a source of revenue for the town
