Marshall, Missouri is located in the U.S. state of Missouri and has a population of over 100,000 people. The town was named after General James K. Polk who served as President of the United States from 1844 to 1849. The first post office in Marshall was established on January 1, 1851. The town was originally known as Blue Butte until 1911 when it changed its name to Marshall due to the presence of the USS Missouri Battleship in port at that time. Marshall is a town in Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first white person to settle in what is now Marshall was John Pemberton in 1827. He and his family moved from Illinois to this location when they were seeking new land for themselves and their four children. The first post office was established in 1829, and it remained in operation until 1865. The town name comes from General Andrew Jackson's retreat to Marshall on July 4th during the American Revolution. In 1859, a group of businessmen came up with the idea of building a railroad through what is now Marshall on one stop between Independence and Topeka. They named the railroad company after General Jackson as a way of honoring him for leading America into its future during the Revolution as well as for his support of the project. This railroad became one of America's most important arteries and helped Marshall grow quickly into an agricultural center with many farms that produce crops such as cotton, corn, potatoes, hay, apples, etc.. The city limits were expanded to include parts of present-day Ottawa Township by an act passed by the Missouri Legislature on March 3rd, 1903 (1903 Mo.) Marshall is a small town in northwest Missouri, United States and the seat of Marshall County. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1839 by military officers who were moving west to find new land for their unit on the American frontier. They named it for General James K. Polk, then president of the United States. The first post office was established in 1840, and one year later settlers arrived with radios to begin broadcasting news from upriver. In 1851, Marshall became an incorporated town with a school and a Baptist church as its cornerstonestones. By 1870, it had become an agricultural center supplying goods to surrounding towns such as Independence and Topeka. When Kansas Territory was organized into State of Missouri in 1861, Marshall became its capital; however, due to its small size it did not have any government buildings until 1865 when a courthouse and jail were built adjacent to the old Methodist Church property which still stands today as part of Marshall's downtown district (now called "Old Town"). In 1870–71, local farmers formed a cooperative known as the Farmers' Loan & Trust Company which helped provide funds for various projects such as water systems and roads. The building now occupied by Mid-America Center mall began construction in 1970 on what would be Union Pacific Railroad's main line between Chicago and St Louis; this addition helped spur economic development within Marshall while also creating jobs for locals during peak years such as 1971 when GDP reached $40 million ($ two million more than 1969). One hundred years after being founded—and just over two decades since Main Street crossed Interstate 35W—Marshall has experienced some major changes that have shaped its character: 1) With greater access to education available throughout much of Greater Missouri thanks to state funding allocations following World War II; 2) A heavy emphasis on suburban living resulting in increased commuter traffic onto I-35W throughout most of the decade; 3) A recent influx of refugees resultant in businesses opening up inside historical African American churches – often becoming ground zero for neighborhood revitalization efforts - makingMarshall feel more connected overall both culturally and ethnically
Marshall was founded in 1831 by James Marshall and his brother, Daniel. The first post office was established in this town on July 1, 1831. In 1861, the Union army invaded Missouri during the American Civil War and occupied it for several months. After the war ended, the town was burned down by Confederate forces. It re-emerged as a small community after Reconstruction began in America. In 1898, Marshall became a U.S. city and retains that name to this day
