Marshall is a small town in Douglas County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It lies along the right bank of the White River. The first white settlers in Marshall were James and Nancy Lea who immigrated from Ireland in 1819. They founded a log cabin on the east side of the river opposite present-day Marshall High School. In 1830, they moved to what is now Center Township and built a gristmill on their land which continued operation until 1865. In 1836, William Bledsoe bought land south of Center Township from James and Nancy Lea for $1,000. He began to build a mill on his property which became known as "Bledsoe's Mill". The mill produced flour for local markets and also did some manufacturing such as shoeing and wagon building. In 1839, Bledsoe sold his mill to John Sayers who operated it until 1861 when he sold it to Larkin & Company who continued operations until 1903 when it was destroyed by fire. On November 3, 1860, Marshall was incorporated as a village under the name "Marshall". On December 15 of that year, all citizens of Marshall voted to change its name to "Marshall" after General Ulysses S. Grant because they felt that this name would be more marketable than "Kemper", which had been used by earlier residents of Marshall. The new name lasted until 1907 when it was changed back to "Marshall". In 1870s & 1880s there were many quarries near Marshall due to increased demand for limestone found in Kansas but these mines closed due to competition from other countries or problems with water supply or simply economic reasons

Marshall was founded in 1819 by Captain John Marshall and his family. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who had been a hero of the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly and by 1836 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1846, the Union Army invaded Missouri to stop the slaveowner state from joining Confederate States of America. The Union military victory at White Sulphur Springs resulted in a large number of slaves being freed in Marshall. The town declined after the war but it regained its prosperity in the mid-19th century thanks to heavy industry and agriculture. A major local employer was Phelps Dodge Corporation which built an aluminum mine and smelter here in 1925. Marshall also became known as one of the most important ports on the Mississippi River due to its location near both St Louis and Cairo, Illinois. However, economic development slowed during World War II because of scarce resources and competition from other towns along the river ringed by tank farms and munitions factories. Marshall experienced another period of growth during postwar years as many new residents moved here from outlying areas following technological advances such as television broadcasting, air travel, and chemical production (the latter two leading to suburbanization). However, this growth stopped abruptly after World War II when Marshall's economy plummeted as these technologies changed forever what traditional manufacturing functions could do for businesses like those that had once thrived hereabouts: tractor production ceased; plastics were developed instead; steel mills closed down; lastly coal mining stopped altogether leaving Marshall with only its agricultural sector remaining today... Marshall is located at 38°27′N 94°14′W / 38.[1]northwest[2]and 94[3]east longitude on I-35 exit 265 southbound just east of Claytonville Road
