The town was founded by John Marshall in 1824 as a small cabin community on the east bank of the Mississippi River. In 1854, when Iowa became a state, Marshal became one of its first townships; it remained so until 1907 when it was annexed by St. Louis County. After years of decline during the Great Depression and World War II,Marshall has become an economically buoyant community with several shopping malls and numerous companies headquartered there including Monsanto (now Bayer), Philips Norelco (now Gillette), AIG (now Citigroup) and Mastercard (now Visa). On July 16, 2009,[2] due to severe flooding caused by storms Tropical Storm Ike[3] and Hurricane Irene,[4][5], many businesses closed up shop due to damage done from floodwaters that had swept through downtown SaintLouis over previous days.[6][7][8] However most business were back open within 2 weeks as insurance claims more than paid for lost/damaged equipment.[9][10]

Marshall is a town in Wood County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first settlement in Marshall was made on the east side of the Kiska River by John Hough and his family in 1834. A post office was established at Marshall in 1835, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1870. The first settler to purchase land within present-day Marshall was James Meeks in 1852. In 1865, William Dickey purchased from Meeks a large tract of land that included present-day Marshalltown and most of what are now Webster City, Bloomfield Township, and Ford Heights Township. Marshall township began being organized on November 14, 1866 when it joined Wood County as its first unit. On February 8, 1880, it became a city with a population of 2,000 people when it merged with neighboring Florissant City. On October 9 of that year, Florissant City merged with Stilwell City to form what would become Stilwell Municipal District No. 2 (now Ferguson). In 1902 Marshall had an annexation by neighbouring Jefferson City which had then been experiencing rapid growth due to its location near two major railroads: the Illinois Central Railroad and the Missouri Pacific Railway (MPR). As part of this merger Jefferson City also added much territory including much now known as northwest Randallstown including parts of Freeman Park Estates currently home to McNamara Elementary School as well as portions of Brushy Hill subdivisions now home to Greenbush Middle School and Greenbush High School south westward into Belknap Hills subdivision northwestward into McCulloch Woods subdivisionnorthwestward into current day Randallstown eastward into Auburn Hills subdivisioneastward into present day Ferguson which then became an enclave for Jefferson City residents only
Marshall was founded in 1795 by Captain James Marshall and his family. The town was named after General James Marshall, the veteran of the French and Indian War who served as a colonel in the Continental Army. The first post office opened in 1806. The county was formed in 1820 from parts of Jackson County. In 1824, it became a part of St. Louis County.
