Marshall, Missouri was founded in 1836 by James Marshall and his brother John. The town was named for the river that flows through it, the Mississippian River. The first grocery store in Marshall opened in 1839. In 1861, the Union army moved into Marshall and burned all of the businesses except one grocery store. The town quickly rebuilt and continued to grow until it had a population of over 100,000 in 1920. During World War II, Marshall was home to three large munitions plants which produced artillery ammunition, aircraft fuel oil, and other materials for the war effort. After the war ended, Marshal slowly regained its former prosperity as a bedroom community for nearby St Louis. In 1993, however, due to pollution from several nearby heavy industry projects and reductions in government support for economic development there has been significant decline in business activity inMarshall since then. There have been attempts at revitalization over the years but no real progress has been made so far despite some money being invested by city leaders hopeful that things will change soon enough

The first settler in Marshall was David Creyer in 1836. He and his wife, Rebecca, founded a log cabin here on the present site of the town on October 15, 1836. They named their settlement "Creyerville" after their home county of Cumberland in Maryland. In 1840, William Haughton donated land to build a school in Marshall. The first school building was built on the current site of Main Street in 1845 by farmers John Swayze and Charles Kappler. In 1865, it was renamed "Marshall Academy". In 1875, developers J.H. Smith and WmMills opened an insurance company at Marshall which became one of the largest insurance companies east of the Mississippi River. In 1903, Marshal voters approved a $30 000 bond issue to fund improvements to local roads and bridges which included new schools and a library; Town Hall; courthouse; fire engine; clinic;and two-story Masonic Lodge (now known as Kresson's Auction House). In 1938-39, during World War II most residents took up arms against Nazi Germany with guerrilla warfare tactics known as "The Great North American Defense Union". A committee from Marshal organized resistance groups who conducted sabotage operations against Axis targets throughout Missouri including stealing essential supplies from military camps and sabotaging transportation equipment along I-70 near Topeka for example
The Marshall County Courthouse is a historic courthouse located in Marshall, Missouri. It was built in 1907, and is a two-story, rectangular red brick building with a projecting masonry cornice. The front facade features a three-story portico supported by four Ionic columns and crowned by an octagonal bell tower. The building served as the county seat from 1907 to 1927. In 1925, the courthouse was replaced by the current structure.
