Marshall is a city in and the county seat of St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 14,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Marshall was James Fenton in 1821. The town site was surveyed by George Stephenson in 1830 and named for General John Marshall (1785–1845), an early American commander during the Mexican War who had been captured and held as a prisoner of war before being released by Mexico. A post office called Fentonville was established in 1834, but it was discontinued in 1835 because no mail reached the community from there. In 1839, Gideon Welles founded a small town to the east of Fentonville on land he acquired from Samuel Holden while Holdenwas serving as mayor of Springfield. Welles renamed his new town Marshall after General John Marshall. The population of Marshall grew rapidly; by 1840, it had reached 150 residents and had its own schoolhouse and courthouse. In 1845, when Missouri became an independent state, Marshal became one of its thirteen cities. When Kansas entered the Union on February 29th, 1861, Marshalls economy shifted from agriculture to manufacturing due to Abraham Lincoln's decision to issue free land to settlers along the Kansas River so that they could establish ranching operations and thereby create some wealth for the state government which would then be able to provide public services such as education and defense. By 1862 what remained of Armstrong County had become central eastern Missouri following Butler's Invasion (April 17) which devastated most populated areas within Ohio County including Starkville where over 50% of all male citizens were killed or wounded with about 30% remaining unaccounted for until 1865 when Findlater discovered them living among Native Americans south of I-70 near Elk Grove Village On January 1st 1865 when Confederate Brigadier General Lawton ordered his men across I-70 into northwestern Iowa Territory they burned down five bridges over theKansas River destroying infrastructure necessary for farming so much so that only two miles upstream from present day Wichita Falls one bridge still stands standing
