In 1861 or 1862 Union forces burned down several buildings in downtown Manchester before moving into nearby Springfield due to Confederate advances towards that city during the American Civil War On December 12th 1865 Union troops burned down nearly all remaining business in downtown Manchester after discovering stores had been storing supplies for Confederate forces retreating through Missouri under the command of Genl John Sibley The fire began just north of where US 6 crosses Central Ave., now called Business Loop Rd., east of what is now First Ave., which then became known as East Starkville Rd./Route 66 Manchester's prosperity was based on its location along I-435; it easily connected with other parts of St Francois County by road or rail transportation facilities Manchester's growth slowed beginning around 1970 but has since resumed with some new businesses opening up since then

Manchester is located on the Arkansas River in northeastern Kansas, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Topeka and 50 miles (80 km) west of Wichita. In 1875, when Topeka became an independent republic under President Grover Cleveland, cotton ginners began arrive from Kentucky looking for work on new plantations; local citizens met them at their hotel where they gave away food and drinks until they went back home to give their families some money so they could buy flour for breadmaking and clothes for winter wear instead of using cottonseed oil which was expensive and bad for shipping supplies across country rivers).
