In 1920-21, Manchester annexed part of Stephenson County which made it one of only two cities in Missouri to do so (the other being Springfield). On July 1st 1925, part of Randolph County east of Manchester lying north of I-435 became part of Manchester also making it one city within one county with three townships having their own government: Allegany Township (northwest corner), Butler Township (northeast corner), Clinton Township (southwest corner)
Manchester, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Municipal District. The community was founded in 1871 by two brothers named James and John Manchester as a wagon-road center on the edge of an ancient Cherokee hunting ground. When railroads arrived in the area, Manchester quickly became one of their most important railroad terminals. The town developed into a self-sufficient agricultural center with Negro laborers playing an important role in its economy until World War II when they were replaced by white workers from Illinois and other states. After that time, Manchester's focus shifted to becoming a bedroom community for Springfield. Until recently, Manchester's only industry has been agriculture; however, it is now home to several businesses including three banks, one gas station/convenience store, and four churches. In recent years there have been efforts to revive downtown business activity with plans for new retail buildings and more public transportation options such as bike lanes and pedestrian crossings across Main Street

By 1900, Manchester had become one of Missouri's largest cities and its economy was based on agriculture, industry, commerce and services. However, during World War IIManchester experienced significant growth as a munitions factory which produced radios, vehicles and other military equipment. After the war ended in 1945, much of the city's industrial activity shifted towards tourism as new businesses rose up around downtown). Today most of what remains from Manchester's past is seen within its neighborhoods such as Southside (the oldest part of town), Pigeon Forge (an amusement park built in the early 19th century), Northside (a redevelopment area that includes several modern shopping malls) and Downtown (where much of today's commercial district is located).

However, the following decade saw a decline in the town's population, as immigrants from Ireland and Italy replaced British-born residents. Manchester eventually fell out of favor with American politicians and officials, and experienced significant social decline during the 1850s. In 1857, however, Manchester reemerged as an important center for cotton production due to its location at the mouth of the Mississippi River. The town continued to grow throughout the 1860s and 1870s, becoming one of Missouri's most prosperous cities. By 1880, Manchester had reached its current size and status as a major city in Missouri.
