The first people to settle in Manchester were French Canadians who came overland in covered wagons during the 1840s searching for an opening to Oregon that would connect Canada with what they saw as America's growing wealth and power. They arrived around 1845 and built their log cabin on what is now Main Street near where present day University Avenue meets Route 66 south of downtown Manchester In 1854, James Hays organized a group called "The Republican Club" to promote republicanism among farmers throughout western Missouri before he ran for office in that year's general election as a Democrat against incumbent Ulysses S Grant Hays won but when he took office ceded control of party organization to General Alfred Ewing who became one of President Abraham Lincoln's key advisors In 1865 Hays died suddenly at his home while still president pro tempore of the Senate after serving two terms In 1888 Mayor John J. Gallagher appointed George Washingburn attorney general replacing Elijah Hunt Porter who had been acting attorney general since Hays' death
