The first permanent settler in Manchester was Daniel Boone in 1786. When the western counties of Jackson and Platte were created on March 16, 1836, they included much of what is now Manchester. The town site was chosen because it had a swampy location that would make for easy transportation overland to marketplaces and other towns along the Platte River. In 1838 when Quincy Wagon Road became a wagon road from Independence to Topeka (now Wichita), some residents of Manchester decided to follow suit and founded the city limits of Manchester on December 12th of that year. It wasn’t until 1861 when railroads arrived in central Missouri that people started moving into Manchester to live and work near these new facilities. Manchester quickly became one of the most important settlements inJackson County as its location made it an ideal place for business and industry. Businesses such as cotton mills, grocery stores, schools, churches and hospitals soon sprang up around downtown; making Manchester one of the most vibrant cities in America during this time period. By 1910 there were five banks in town with nearly 100 businesses located there including six breweries and four hotels/motels. In 1915 General Motors moved their headquarters from Detroit to Mexico City but left behind a large factory complex called GM Place which still stands today adjacent to Interstate 55 outside Greater St Louis Metropolitan Area
