Manchester is located on Highway 218 about 12 miles (19 km) west of I-435 and 14 miles (22 km) east of US Highway 44. According to the 2010 census, Manchester has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water. The town was first settled by Englishmen during the Mexican-American War when they were ordered to march into Mexico City with General George Armstrong Custer as part of President Polk's effort to subdue Mexico. General Custer's force arrived on July 2, 1847 and began marching southward from Pecos Hills until they reached Tlatelolco where they stopped forthe night on July 3rd/4th before continuing their march northward through Chihuahua City on July 5th/6th before reaching San Luis Potosi on July 7th/8th. They then crossed the Río Grande and marched northeast into Morelos Territory where they camped that night near Las Cruces before continuing their march Monday night without incident onto San Antonio de Bexar County on Tuesday morningJuly 9th They finally arrived at Ixcaltepec early Wednesday morning July 10TH after a daylong march under difficult conditions including exposure to unusual weather conditions such as windstorms lasting up to 24 hours each day along with temperatures as high as 100 degrees Fahrenheit (>43°C). On August 16, 1847 an act authorizing fifteen thousand acres (60% of present-day Manchester) be sold to David Harkness for $5 per acre allowed private citizens who could show evidence of investment or cultivation within one year had obtained title deeds from previous landowners providing that no more than twenty families lived there at any given time; these settlers were known as " incorporados" or incorporators because their role was only that of signing documents giving permission for others to buy land from them rather than actually owning it themselves. On November 3rd 1830 Samuel Morse bought 1/2 mile square piece of land containing what would eventually become downtown Manchester from John Wilkinson who also owned some other tracts adjacent thereto which he conveyed immediately following purchase without having first gone through the incorporation process which would have required two years’ notice period so that all interested parties could be heard before titles could be granted; this action represented perhaps one reason why people called Manchester "Morseville". In 1865 Post Office duties moved from downtown to a new building constructed at Seventh and Market Streets which served as Post Office until 1907 when it moved again across Main Street into what is now MetroHealth Medical Center located just off Interstate 55 in southwestern Manchester Township
