The history of Manchester begins with English settlers who arrived in 1836 after traveling through what is now Kansas City on their way to Santa Fe. At that time there were only about thirty people living in Manchester when it was platted in 1837 by George Stephenson and James Guthrie. In 1840 Stephenson donated land to build a riverboat landing which would become downtown Manchester; this landing later became known as "The Landing." Manchester quickly grew into one of the most important steamboatsports on the lowerMissouri River due to its location upstream from other major towns along both sides of the river such as Hannibal and Jefferson City. By 1856 there were over 1,000 boatmen working out of downtown Manchester alone; these boats transported goods upriver to Springfield or downriver to Kansas City. Even though steamboats stopped running due to technological advancements such as propellers rather than paddlewheels, downtown Manchester maintained an important role throughout much of Midwestern America until prohibition destroyed most industrial capacity around1920s During World War IIManchester served as an airfield providing support for Allied forces efforts during Operation Overlord After World War II many factories closed down but within five years downtown had fully recovered thanks to redevelopment led by Mayor Edward McCarthy In 1965 Mayor McCarthy announced plans for extensive redevelopment called "Civic Center Plaza". This project saw demolition of all but two buildings inside old brick Market Square which would be replaced with new office towers overlooking Interstate 70/I-55 commuter lanes immediately northward from downtown featuring wide open spaces that would eventually become home to several hundred thousand residents During this time also former Firestone Tire plant across I-70 exit went through renovation becoming one of largest office complexes west side Chicago Tribune building moved into renovated site

Manchester is part of the Springfield– Carbondale–Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Manchester was founded by George Waddell in 1824 and named for Manchester, England. It was first settled as a farming community on the west side of the Mound River. The settlement grew rapidly after it became known for its blacksmiths and wagonmakers. In 1848, Manchester merged with neighboring Decatur Township to form Manchester Township (later Manchester Village). The city of Springfield took over most of Manchester's economic activity in the late 1800s until a new factory opened in 1907 that produced radios and other electronics products. The city then closed its doors to Manchester residents during World War II because of military relocation plans. However, some residents returned to their homes during the war years and later purchased businesses reopened within the township boundaries as continuing businesses today. During the 1920s and 1930s, manual labor dominated much of local cotton production; however, with an increase in machine production beginning in World War II onward, many jobs were lost due to technological advances which made manual labor obsolete or difficult to perform effectively under automation pressures. The township experienced rapid growth following incorporation into Springfield when development opportunities opened up along Interstate 67 between Springfield and Carbondale-Springfield; this growth caused nearly allresidential areas within combined township boundaries to be developed including those near downtown Springfield which had been sparsely populated primarily because transportation limitations kept these areas undeveloped until after incorporation into Springfield eliminated any transportation costs associated with commuting between those two communities while also opening up new retail space within central downtown area making it more dense than before while also reducing distances necessary for shopping purposes despite still remaining largely rural even though portions extending beyond incorporated limits now have serves large urban areas including Carbondale-Springfield while still remaining largely rural due both factors together resulting in an overall smaller population density since incorporation into Springfield but larger population size when considering total annexed area making it one of largest consolidated municipalities within Illinois although not geographically contiguous with Illinois’ capital city Chicago
