In honor of General John Brown and for what he stood for during his life and death struggle for liberty, Liberty was created as a state by Congress on November 3rd of 1868. The original boundaries included all present-day Missouri except for portions east of Kansas City that were annexed into Kansas Territory (now Oklahoma). The original name given to Liberty was Jackson County because it extended along Indian Creek towards Jackson Falls (now Independence), Missouri which then formed part of Douglas County. Shortly thereafter however local residents voted to change their county name to Liberty due to its location adjacent to Douglas County (and later Monroe County) – thus giving birth not just to Freedom but also Liberty Township within that county as well as Toombsboro Township within Randolph County outside Lexington MO; In this way we have four counties within one state named after our Libertine ancestor: Fulton (Fulton Co.), Clay (Clay Co.), Stone (Stone Co.), Randolph (Randolph Co.)

In 1847, Liberty became the county seat of Clay County when that county was formed from parts of Livingston and Warren counties. In 1852, Liberty built its first schoolhouse and courthouse. During World War II, Liberty served as an airfield for bombers flying over German-controlled territory in Europe; henceforth it is known as Hargrave Field during this time period. In 1951 Independence reverted back to its original name once again following a referendum vote by residents; however this time word spread about how great the town had become so independence no longer seemed like such an attractive option.
