Liberty, Missouri is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Liberty was founded in 1836 by Methodist missionaries from Kentucky and named for James K. Polk, then president of the United States. In 1839, the legislature renamed Liberty to honor General John A. Logan of Kentucky who had fought and won an expedition against Texas in that year's Mexican-American War. The town motto is "Equality before law." The townsite was laid out as a square block on November 3, 1836 by Abraham Lincoln and James Kapplin, two men influential in early settler development in Clay County. The original store and post office were located at what is now Main Street; they were merged into one building in 1865 when the Post Office Department was created within the newly formed county government. The first house on what is now Main Street was built about 1840 by Levi Strauss & Co., one of many early settlers who came to Liberty after Kansas became a state in 1861 following its admission into the Union as a result of the American Civil War (the Republican party victory over PresidentAndrew Johnson). In 1875, William Fenton established his grocery store there which remains one of the town's most popular businesses today. A number of other businesses followed: wagon manufacturing company Woolworth Bros., seed store Jardine & Mathews (now Monsanto), meatpacking firm Armour Feeds Incorporated (now Tyson Foods), gasoline station Harvey Wickerham located on what are now West First Street and South Second Street streets east of present-day State Route Crossover Drive; Masonic Lodge No 1 constructed in 1879 adjacent to present day Sixth Avenue south of I-435; First Presbyterian Church erected in 1911 adjacent to present day Old Market Square across from Dickinson Elementary School; Independence Hall Museum opened near present day Seventh Avenue east side near Interstate 435 between Broadway Boulevard and US Highway 362; new shopping mall called Gateway Plaza opened northeast corner Eighth Avenue north side just beyond current site of Dickinson Elementary School(an open field once used for agricultural purposes) In 1905 it became part Of Moberly City Limits To Keep Pace With Population Increase In 1916 Liberty chartered its own school district which continues until this very day
