Liberty is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community of Liberty was platted in 1839 by George Washington Boone and named for his wife, Liberty (1785-1860), daughter of Nicholas Cooke and Betsy Ross. A post office has been in operation here since 1852. The first settler on the site of present-day Liberty was John Brown who arrived in August 1836 from Harper's Ferry with nine men. He built a cabin on what is now the west side of Main Street and named it "John Brown's Cabin". In 1840 Samuel Morse established a ferry service across Cedar Creek to bring goods and passengers between Liberty and Hannibal. This service ceased when the bridge over Cedar Creek was completed in 1846. In 1863, General James Longstreet's command besieged Union forces at Independence Rock near Liberty while Confederate General Robert Eppes fought against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant nearby. The battle resulted in more than 200 casualties on both sides with most fatalities occurring among Confederates surrendering or being captured along with their horses and cannonballs! In 1865, after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, two men were tried for treason: Emmett Till (1914)and Andrew Johnson (1865). Both men were found not guilty but received death sentences which were later commuted to life imprisonment without parole due to new legislation passed following Lincoln's assassination that granted pardons to any Americans convicted of certain crimes during the Civil War including treasonous activities! The townspeople voted to secede from Missouri on October 15th, 1861 because they felt that they had been treated unfairly by the state government as well as various military commanders during the war years; however this vote did not result in independence from Missouri until July 6th 1862 when an act known as The Kansas–Nebraska Act became effective which allowed Nebraska Territory to be formed east of Arkansas River while remaining within Missouri boundaries! On January 14th 1913 several thousand people attended a picnic hosted by local farmers at Pine Ridge Battlefield National Monument near Liberty where they listened to speeches by Drummond Woodbury, Mayor William Fenton and other speakers about how Municipal bonds could finance improvements such as waterworks etc... This event helped promote bond sales throughout western Missouri! In 1917 local citizens organized what would become known as "The Legionnaires' Crusade" which aimed to show support for World War I efforts through donations of clothes and food items

The area that is now Liberty was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. The first European settlers arrived in 1821 and built a small cabin on what is now mile marker 20 in present-day Liberty County. In 1836, when Missouri became a state, it lost its portion of Kentucky and gained territory from Illinois. This new land included much of present-day Liberty County including parts of downtown Kansas City. In order to avoid being swallowed up by Kansas City, the original settlers decided to name their new community after one of their own states – Missouri. The town began as a trading post called "Nacogdoches" and soon grew into a large town with over 2,000 residents. By 1860, the population had reached 5,500 people and it continued to grow until 1870 when an earthquake destroyed most of the town center. As a result, only about 350 people lived in downtown Liberty while 3 housed government officials who were needed for protection during Reconstruction period (1867-1877). Despite these challenges however, Liberty flourished through the years and eventually became known as one of the most Bavarian communities in America due to its mixed German/Austrian heritage ( many homes still stand today displaying evidence of this). In 1976,Liberty celebrated its 150th anniversary which saw much progress made both locally and statewide including: establishment of local government; riseofthe economy; increasein cultural awareness; growthof educational institutions; establishmentof historic sites etc.; finally culminating with city incorporation 50 years later!

The town population grew rapidly from its initial settlers, and by 1840 it had a school, post office, and two stores. In 1846, the Town of Liberty merged with the neighboring Village of White Sands to form the new City of Liberty. In 1861, following the Civil War, Liberty became an independent city under Confederate control. After Union troops captured Liberty in 1865, it reverted back to Confederate control until Union forces recaptured it in 1870.
