This store was started by two brothers named Harry and Virgil Atchison in 1924. They sold eyeglasses, sunglasses, contact lenses, and other optical supplies. In 1937, the Atchisons opened a second store called The Optician which became one of the most popular stores in town. It was here that people could buy new glasses or get used glasses from friends and family. In 1951, Harvey Lipscomb opened his own opticians shop in Liberty. He continued to sell optical supplies until his death in 1978. After Harvey Lipscomb's death, his son Larry took over the business and continued to sell optics products until 1993 when he closed down his shop due to financial problems. In 1998, Donny & Dawn O'Keefe reopened their old optician shop and continue to sell optics products until it closed down again in 2003. After three different ownerships, the optic supply store chain known as "TheOptical Enterprise" was founded by four employees of Mid-America Optical Supply Company (MACO) on October 1st 1999 with the goal of providing high quality optical products at competitive prices at local independent stores across America's Great Plains region including Liberty Missouri USA! Liberty served as a center for education and trade until it lost its status as a town in 1870 when it became part of the new city of Springfield. The population declined subsequent to this change until it reached its peak around 1990 before dropping again due to various factors such as loss of jobs, retirements, and family separations. A recent revival has started with the development of a new library which opened in September 2017 and plans are underway for another library addition that will be completed by 2021. Today Liberty remains an important community with strong ties to its history and role within the local government system. The name means "liberty" in French and was given to the town by General James K. Polk during the American Civil War as part of the Treaty of Paris following his victory over Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
