The Union party nominally ran candidates but only two men who lived within commuting distance of Liberty won: Daniel Webster (from New York) and Abraham Lincoln (from Illinois). This shows how divided Missouri was over slavery then - Libertarians supported Lincoln while most southern Democrats did not see him as an emancipator so they boycotted the election

Liberty, Missouri is an agricultural town located in Webster County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield-St Louis metropolitan area. The community formed around a small post office and general store in 1848. The first settler in Liberty was J.C. Neuman and his family from Germany; they arrived on horseback and were the only ones to settle there permanently. In 1854, two brothers named John Davenport founded the town of Liberty on a tract of land near present day Highway 71. They named it after their then-native country with which they had just come into contact: Liberty Hall (now known as Main Street) served as the nucleus of what would become Liberty until 1956 when it was renamed Freedom Park following its incorporation into the city of Springfield. As one result of its location within easy reach of major markets and transportation options, Liberty quickly became a leading center for grain production in eastern Missouri during the mid 19th century - becoming one of only a handful of communities in this region to remain continuously viable through multiple economic downturns (the others being Carthage and Alton).
