The town site lay within what is now Webster Groves and Independence Heights neighborhoods on the eastern edge of downtown Saint Louis after being made an incorporated village in 1872[2]. In 1881, land adjacent to downtown that had been leased from the State by citizens voted to become an independent city with its own Mayor and City Council[3] which lasted until 1920 when it merged into Saint Louis City (later Saint Louis County) under mayor-council form[4]. On July 24, 1927,[5] a fire destroyed most of downtown SaintLouis but did not damage Liberty so it reoccupied quickly with new buildings erected on Market Street between First and Second Streets while also expanding eastward from those original boundaries onto University Avenue into what is now Central West End Neighborhoods
