Stephenson built a target stand on the corner of Main and Elm Streets in Liberty. The stands continued to be used until 1861 when they were destroyed by Union troops during the American Civil War. On May 1st of that year residents voted to name their new city "Liberty" in honor of the American Revolution both as an act of bravery and as an acknowledgement that their sacrifices would not go unnoticed by their state's legislators or government officials who were pledged to protect them both politically and economically from those who dared challenge their rights as free men (Galloway). He was found guilty and sentenced to death but he appealed this decision and won his case before the Supreme Court. This allowed him to be executed instead of being sent to prison. After Brown's execution, many people turned their attention towardsliberty because they realized that they could still continue fighting for their rights even if they didn't live in liberty anymore. Since its founding in 1821, Liberty has been an important part of American history because it has seen many changes: It became a small farming town which helped grow wheat crops; It experienced several waves of immigrants (mostly Germans) who helped make it into one of America's most diverse cities; And finally, afterBrown's execution in 1838 it became an important center for free speech and democracy as many residents came from nearby towns such as St Louis or Kansas City to joinin protests against slavery

In 1821, the United States Congress passed a law recognizing slaves as citizens and giving them certain rights, including the right to vote. slavery continued to be legal in Missouri until May 15, 1865, when it was abolished by the U.S. Supreme Court.
