Liberty is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri, and is the county seat of Liberty County. The population was 24,569 at the 2010 census[1]. The town began as a stagecoach stop on the old Santa Fe Trail in 1836, and became an important center for cotton production in the region. It was renamed Liberty after the American Revolution, when it became clear that Royal Governor George Washington would not recognize it as part of what remained British America. The first settler in what is now Liberty County was John Armstrong who built a cabin on Mount Hermon in 1836. He named his cabin "Moses" after his ancestor Moses Green who had settled there two years earlier. In 1839, John Armstrong's son James moved from Mount Hermon to become one of the first white men to inhabit what is now Liberty Township.[2] James Armstrong founded what is now known as Armstrong Brewing Company which operated until 1907[3]. The City of Liberty was founded by ordinance filed February 14th, 1865,[4] and named for General Lafayette because he had given support to its establishment during the American Civil War[5]. In 1868-9, a group of farmers from Crawford County decided to move their crops into what are now Taylor County due to lack of land elsewhere. They set up shop near Independence but soon ran into problems with local Indians who were hostile towards them because they believed they were Englishmen seeking revenge for Indian attacks on their people some years earlier. In 1870-1 four local men - Hiram Bogan (1837-1911), Amos Purdy (1841-1907), Levi Graves (1845-1922) and Edward Tiffin (1849-1920) - started a store called Tiffany & Company near present day Jefferson City which prospered until 1909 when it went bankrupt due largely to Indian hostilities against whites[6]. This event led to increased tensions between white settlers and local Indians which continue even today; six people have been killed by Indians in Morgan County since 1840[7]. From about 1830 through 1860 most cotton production took place along the Santa Fe Trail between Independence and New Mexico Territory; however, starting around 1860 this shifted towards Missouri River Valley areas where better soils awaited treatment with more lime application followed by Cultivated Land Operations or CLO farming techniques developed specifically for this type of crop growth’ [8], making Liberty one of these early Valley districts [9], although much later many other areas also became major cottonproducing regions including St Louis metropolitan area
