Liberty, Missouri is home to the world's first gun-free zone. The state legislature passed a law in 1994 banning handguns within 1,000 feet of public schools and libraries. In 1881, Jethro Gibbs founded Gibbs Manufacturing Company which became one of the most successful small businesses in America with products such as cigars and cigarettes. After 20 years of success, Gibbs merged with another small business owners group led by Cyrus McCormick & Co., founder of Armoury Ammunition Company (now Smith & Wesson). This created what is now known as McCormick & Co., Incorporated (C&C) which continues to make significant contributions to American society today through their philanthropic work and entrepreneurship experiences across industries including health care (through their Medical Device division), technology (through their CE company), education (through their Pre-Kindergarten through college prep programs), real estate (through their development arm Pemberton Homes) and more! In 1984 Liberty suffered major damage during an earthquake that killed over 100 people including many local businessmen who had gathered there for an agricultural show that day. The city hall was badly damaged but still stands today as a reminder of how resilient Liberty can be despite some tough times!
