Liberty is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,792 at the 2010 census. It is the location of the Liberty National Monument. The town was founded by General James K. Polk on October 8, 1836 as Liberty Station and named for the French colony of Louisiana (present-day Orleans Parish) which Polk had visited while in Congress during his governorship. The first post office at Liberty was established on November 5, 1837. The first store in Liberty was opened by John Ladd and A C Owen on December 9, 1837. The first school in Liberty was opened by Mrs Denton on January 3, 1840. In 1842 the town site was sold to J H Wilkinson for $5,000 cash and property located east of present day I-435.[1] Wilkinson built a mill there which produced flour for local merchants until it burned down in 1865[2]. In 1861 Union general Nathaniel P Hammond captured Independence from Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee during the Battle of Independence Day Field Force Offensive; this resulted in Missouri becoming part of Union America following Lincoln's Proclamation that all slave states should become "the commonwealths and territories of all Americans".[3] Hammond's victory inaugurated much Reconstruction policy across Missouri including the early days when African Americans were not counted as citizens or allowed to vote without prior permission from their owner or white guardian - an experience known as "black civil rights". In 1865 Union general Ulysses S Grant moved his army into central Missouri after its defeat at Gettysburg; he ordered that all slavery be abolished throughout organized Missouri within three years or else faced military action against Union forces loyal to fugitive slaves living inside Confederate-held territory north of Kansas City. By this deadline only 7% (approximately 400 out of 605) of free black people living in central Missouri remained after five years under Confederate rule; however some 2200 freedmen managed to escape into Union lines before then.[4] On July 8th 1865 emancipation proclamation became effective throughout organized Missouri with freedom ceremonies held at various locations around the state beginning on July 10th.[5][6][7][8] Shortly afterwards Grant issued an Executive Order terminating slavery statewide within one year – a move considered significant given that most white people felt they would have had to fight a future war against slavery if it continued existing statewide[9][10]. Although Lincoln opposed ending slavery nationwide due to moral considerations,[11] granting individual states wide latitude nullifying his order ended Reconstruction nationally once and for all – another example illustrating how political power can change abruptly across time and space amid rapid social transformation.
Liberty, Missouri is a town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The community began as a small farmstead in 1839 and became a village in 1876. It was named for the right to freedom which the town's founders believed in. Liberty was established as a white settlement by settlers John Sibley and his wife Nancy on what is now the eastern edge of Johnson County. On July 4, 1839, Sibley and Nancy organized their fellow settlers into an early township with them called "Sibley’s Grove". One year later they changed it to "Liberty" after gaining their freedom from slavery. In 1860, while all but two of present-day Johnson County were still slave states (Missouri had become free on January 1st 1861), Liberty sided with Confederate forces during the American Civil War and lost its entire population to Union troops. The community slowly regained its former prosperity after Reconstruction; however, it never reached its pre-war level of development again until recent times due to gentrification and Urban Renewal initiatives throughout nearby Kansas City. As Liberty increased in population over time, so too did support for public education; this led to construction of one of the first high schools within walking distance of Liberty in 1889. A new library also opened that same year; this facility has been used ever since as an educational center for local students and staff alike. currently there are three elementary schools (grades PreK through 8th grades) located on two campuses adjacent to each other across from downtown KCMO; one serving girls only (in addition to boys PreK thru 8th grades) while another serves both genders combined (9th through 12th grade).liberty has also gained ground recently for professional sports teams with multiplexing providing easy access for spectators - including real estate developers - who can easily park close by without having to enter through traffic or build any extra infrastructure
