Liberty, Missouri is an incorporated city in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,721 at the 2010 census. It was founded on April 30, 1836 by Joel Pettis and John Bond as a town on the prairie east of present-day Springfield. Liberty grew rapidly due to its location and became a small town with a population of around 2,000 when it accepted statehood in 1853. The city experienced growth during the late 19th century as railroads arrived in the area and agriculture increased; however, World War II led to significant declines in population and businesses throughout the early 21st century. In 2000 Liberty had an estimated population of 3,500 people.[1][2] The first settler in what is now Liberty was Joel Pettis who came from Kentucky in 1825.[3] He built a log cabin on his land which he named "Pettisville." Pettisville served as the nucleus for what would become Liberty because nearby settlers were willing to help him build his Cabin and provide goods such as cornmeal and flour for his new community. On May 11th, 1836,[4] eight men from Illinois[5] traveled through western Missouri[6] on their way to Kansas City – they were looking for land that could be leased from David Dudley Butler so they could start developing Butler's new railroad empire. They stopped at Pettisville on their way south but did not enter into any agreement because they didn't know about Missouri's fledgling state government. When they got back home they sent word back to Illinois that they had found something valuable: a tract of land across the border in Union County that would become Liberty after it was rejected by Butler because it was too far away from his tracks.[7][8] Despite being uninterested in this offer (possibly due to recent events), Butler agreed to sell Liberty to John Bond who also lived near Independence Avenue and soon erected a stockade around his new town fearing Indian attack or theft by either side. This acted as both firewall against possible attacks[9][10][11] by hostile Indians* (the actual attackers never materialized)† while also providing security since no one knew exactly where the current borders were between Union Countyand St Francois County*. After some initial struggles with getting residents interested in setting up shop within their newly formed town,[12][13][14],[15] among other things such as lack of water or power supplies,[16],[17], development slowly picked up steam over time until reaching its peak during Prohibition (1920s) when many large businesses moved out into larger cities due to high cost/quality ratios associated with alcohol production).[18](*) Many aspects of today’s society were born out of these early days including Prohibition-era prostitution rates which are still exceeded only by illegal street levels activities today †(*).due largely to intermarriage between local families [*],urban areas post prohibition saw rapid growth**
Liberty, Missouri was founded on November 3, 1836, by John Brown and his men in what is now Helena County. The town of Liberty had been organized two years earlier as the site of a future Civil War battle between pro-slavery rebels and proslavery Unionists. When the war did not materialize, Liberty became a center for slave trade in the area. In 1859, Liberty became an independent republic after a referendum passed by its residents to secede from the United States. The Seceded Republic of Liberty lasted until 1861 when it was annexed into Confederate Missouri.
