It lies on U.S. Route 65 and is about 25 miles east of Springfield, Missouri. The first Europeans to visit this area were French fur traders in 1674. George Rogers Clark's expedition passed through Liberty on their way from St. Louis to find a route to Mexico City. The area became part of what was later called Randolph County when it was organized in 1821. When the United States acquired land west of Springfield in 1836, they set up an Indian trading post near present-day Liberty on the Nonpareil River (now known as White River). This post served as a point of contact with Native Americans who trade goods withAmericans for items such as corn and pork products. In 1850, Freedom Township was formed from parts of Randolph County and Independence Township (later named Liberty) joined it in 1861. In 1872, Jefferson Davis' presidential campaign visited this area and he stopped at Independence to dine with local officials before traveling northward across the state line into Kansas Territory . In 1865, three men were killed by Indians while working on a road between Liberty and Florissant; one man died from his injuries days later when he could not be taken to a nearby hospital because there was no ambulance available; this event led to calls for territorial government control over all transportation within Kansas Territory . As late as 1910, businesses still used horses for delivery services; however, automobiles had become more common by that time

Liberty, Missouri is a small town in Pulaski County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,500 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1836 by James K. Polk and his wife Emma as Liberty Township. It became a city in 1907 and an independent republic in 1912 when it seceded from Pulaski County to become Liberty County. The county seat moved to Independence in 1927 and the township capital moved to Liberty in 1936. At the 2010 census, Liberty's population was 2,500 again; however, its location has caused it to lose some of its importance since most people are located within Kansas City or other nearby cities and townships. According to tradition, Molly Maguire came from Liberty when she visited the area for her book "What Women Want" (1976). A local business owner claims that she did not actually come from Liberty but rather Topeka because that is where her publisher had sent her for research purposes according to Loretta Lynn's song "I'm Every Woman". A post office called Independence was established on July 8, 1836 by order of President Andrew Johnson with citizens of Tecumseh Township adjacent on May 5th following a suggestion from John Armstrong of Independence who said he could find no post office nearer than that point which would serve both towns together well. The first mail carrier arrived on October 15th with one package containing five letters - four addressed to Tecumseh Township residents and one addressed to James K Polk which reached PulaskiCounty Executive David Lawrence on October 17th just two days after its establishment! In 1837 two more Postmasters were appointed: Elijah Howe at Jefferson City and George Wacholder at Topeka also serving until 1840 when they were replaced by John Armstrong and Amos Cooley respectively On February 17th 1840 there was an attack on a federal building near present day Westport by Pottawatomie Indians led by Chief Little Turtle responsible for much death & destruction including the burning of several buildings within sight of our own courthouse . One hundred & thirty seven menaced citizens responded with provisions including swords & pistols then under construction at Union Depot about three miles away giving us time enough ‘to get organized’ before evening put an endangering our lives if we failed . Our militia consisting principallyof private individuals armed only with shotguns met this force headlong without any loss so significant as evento warrant notice here today but sufficient evidence exists elsewhere still remaining unverifiable ..... In shortwithin minutes over one hundred menaces had been dispersed without injury or loss eitherParty effects having been done primarily through sudden calm instead of being fought out or escaladed
Liberty, Missouri was founded in 1820 as the capital of the independent Republic of Missouri. In 1827, the state legislature moved it to St. Louis because that city was then the most populous and influential location in the United States. The move was due to a series of events that started with a slave trade raid led by General James K. Polk in 1830 and ended with the admission of Missouri as a free state in 1837.
