It is the largest community in Clay County by population and also the most populous municipality within the Jackson County metropolitan area. The history of Liberty begins with its location on an Indian hunting camp that was abandoned in 1826. In 1837, a group of Mormons from Nauvoo built a settlement on the site and called it Liberty. By 1840, when Independence Missouri become a state, Liberty had grown to include 4 stores and 30 residents. In 1846, voters approved annexation to Jackson County; as a result, Liberty became one of the first municipalities in Jackson County. The town's growth continued until 1911 when it lost its status as a municipality because of zoning changes made by the county government. In 2006, Liberty began planning for redevelopment that would add 150 new homes and businesses to its current downtown area. The project received financial sponsorship from local businesses and donors including Pinnacle Bank and American Express Company among others. Construction began in 2007 and ended in 2009; while progress has been made since then (most notably with completion of major infrastructure projects such as upgraded streets), much work still needs to be done before full occupancy can be achieved: such as improving parking availability and adding several new restaurants/. bars/, theaters/, etc.. As one of only two towns in Clay County without any services provided by either schools or public transportation (the other being West Bloomfield), citizens must rely on private automobiles or ground transportation for virtually all activities outside their homes - which can be quite challenging given limited resources available locally. This often leads to gridlock on nearby highways during peak hours due to high traffic levels; however this problem is slowly becoming lessened as more people are moving into Liberty over recent years.
