The town's only other remaining building was a log building used by school trustees until 1902. One reason for this destruction may have been because Liberty was allied with Confederate forces throughout the war; slavery had been abolished in Union territory following the end of hostilities but continued to be legal in Confederate-controlled areas such as Missouri and Arkansas. This made it difficult for Union troops to take back what they considered to be lost ground - though some buildings were rebuilt afterthe war thanks to donations from local citizens or Reconstruction officials. Meanwhile, many residents fled into nearby Jefferson City or Independence where freedom was more easily attainable despite similar hardships faced by their hometowners within Union lines
