The town became an important station on the Underground Railroad because it had free stores and post office for fugitive slaves. Many abolitionists came to Liberty to escape slavery or to find new homes after the Mexican-American War ended with Mexico's defeat in 1848. In 1861, when Confederate forces moved into Missouri to fight for slavery, Liberty's residents chose not to surrender and fought against the Confederates instead. After Union troops arrived in force, most of Liberty surrendered on October 16th 1861. The town lost its importance following World War II; however it still has a few buildings from that time period including a Presbyterian church and two high school football stadiums which were used during various sports events including soccer games and state championships until they were destroyed in a fire in 1998
