Liberty is an American state located in the Midwestern United States. It is bordered by Missouri to the south and east, Kansas to the north, and Illinois to the west. Liberty is a small town in southwestern Missouri, United States. It was chartered on April 17, 1821, as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The town lies about 20 miles (32 km) south of the Arkansas state line and 15 miles (24 km) north of the Texas state line. Liberty has a population of about 350 people as of the 2010 census[1]. The first settler in Liberty was James Wimsatt, who arrived in 1820 from Kentucky. He built a log cabin on what is now US- Route 66 just north of present-day Liberty. In 1830, Isaac Asbury built his house at what is now US-Route 606 east of Liberty. By 1830, three other families had moved to Liberty: George Hargrave, John Fenton and Isaac Richards. In 1834, Elijah White settled near present day US-Route 66 and built a cabin there also. In 1840s two more settlers were hired by General Sam Houston to help him build Fort Bend County seat at Huntsville; one man named Levi Richardson and another named Solomon Coleman worked for Houston for four years during that time period. After Houston's death in 1845, most of his men returned home except for Richardson who stayed to help build Rice Village on Buffalo Bayou west of downtown Liberty while some others traveled to find new land grants around Texas.[2] In 1850s only two families lived in Liberty: John Ewing and Sarah Atherton bought their house from Abram Butterfield five years earlier after he had founded Wichita Falls northeast of Wichita Falls but they left when Kansas became an independent country without any central government authority[3]. On February 14th 1861, Vandalia Bonded cattle stole from Smith & Elder stagecoach stop west side road near present day IH 35 just before 6 p.m.[4] Unknown gunmen killed all six passengers including driver David Sands with revolvers outside the door waiting for them inside the stagecoach by firing off several rounds into the air above their heads before driving away[5][6][7] This event started what would become known as "The Drive" throughout western central Missouri where mobs would travel to different towns looking for cattle thieves over various periods until finally catching them or killing them whenever possible began identified as " ranges wars". Two days later on February 16th 1861 Confederate cavalry units under Brigadier General Sterling Price attacked early morning wagon train led by Major Edwin Booth traveling from Independenceport through Cedar Rapids downriver past modern day Springfield between Pecan Point Bridge and Iuka Landing coming ashore at Big Springs Landing east side this operation caused great alarm among all Delegates assembled at Independenceport who believed that they were being invaded[8][9][10] The primary purpose behind this attack was interceptions/destruction/extermination so that no supplies could be brought upriver past Big Springs Landing which Union forces controlled [11]) On March 1st 1861 Confederate Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked an American wagon train consisting mostly African Americans en route downriver towards St Louis via Osage Hills Junction then following Deep River crossing over escarpment northwest reaching Cutbank landing thence southwest bound along river mouth arriving at Springdale Landing just belowpresent day Carthage Lake less than 2 miles upstream from present day New Madrid National Wildlife Refuge having passed through present day Nauvoo Heights immediately adjacent to old Nauvoo Cemetery[12]) Thereafter Major Edwin Booth arrested many membersofthe attacking force resulting in many convictions including death sentences against ten defendants ultimately serving fourteen years each before being paroled prior to 1865[13],[14]). The raid has been cited as one reason why Union troops burned Apple Pie Factory located across Illinois Highway 12 about 8 miles south east original site
