Liberty, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The community was founded in 1821 by Capt. John Searl, a soldier from New York who had come to escape debts and war. It was named for the Massachusetts independence movement and for the American Revolutionary War general George Washington. The first permanent settler in Liberty was Major James Aiken, who arrived in 1824. Aiken's farmstead became the nucleus of what would become Liberty. In 1830, two brothers-in-law, Levi Coffin and Solomon Stowell, bought land adjoining Aiken's property and began to develop it into a town. They named their new settlement after George Washington—the first time that such an honor had been given to any town in America. Although Liberty grew slowly until 1845 when its population reached 508 people, it soon became an important center of commerce and culture within the area due to its location at the intersection of several routes linking eastern Missouri with western Illinois and Kansas City. In 1848, Liberty hosted the Republican National Convention which nominated President James K. Polk for president; Polk won with 54% of the popular vote over Democrat Andrew Johnson. In 1861, Liberty was part of Confederate Missouri during the American Civil War; however, it ultimately sided with Unionism and remained an independent city until 1865 when it rejoined Unionism as part of Kansas City metropolitan area under Union control
