Lebanon, Missouri is a small town in northwestern Missouri on the east bank of the Kuskokwim River. The population was 1,059 at the 2000 census. It is part of $4 million (2002) St. Francois County Statistical Area. The first settler in Lebanon, Missouri was Mennonite George and Martha Hagerty in 1836. Other early settlers were Huguenot John Ladd and his wife Catharine who arrived in 1840; German Peter Pohlmann settled in 1846-48; Polish Stanislaus Giegoldt moved to Lebanon in 1852; Danish Søren Ringsgaard started farming there in 1865. Lebanon post office was established on December 12, 1867, part of Great Britain's "Pioneering Settlements" program which aimed to encourage settlement by Native Americans along the Illinois Rivers including what are now Lafayette and Boone counties. The first postmaster was James Auldbrooks. History tells us that one of the earliest businesses in Lebanon was a tailor shop operated by Andrew Fullerton from Mount Vernon, Kentucky from about 1830 to 1840 when he opened a store near present day Elmira Road and Third Street. He also raised chickens and cows for local markets until1850 when he discontinued operation due to changing market patterns caused by railroads coming through town center during that time period There were several Methodist churches established around this time including Zion Chapel (1868), First Baptist Church (1870), Baker Chapel (1871), Highland Presbyterian Church (1872) and Christ's United Brethren Churches before it became known as First Presbyterian Church of Lebanon when Reverend David Ritchie came to town with his family circa 1888 after serving as pastor at Uniontown Methodist Episcopal church there for many years prior thereto In 1893 Rev J F Rankin arrived from St Louis with his family to become the first minister here followed soon thereafter by others such as Ebenezer Cooksey until 1949 when Rev Wm B Crouch succeeded him . In 1951 congregations united under one roof forming Christ’s United BrethrenChurch which remains extant today . From 1901-1911 there were three schools - one located on Main Street across from Post Office while another two buildings were located off Third Street between State Route 66/Ulysses Road intersection and Main Street where an addition later served as a Drugstore/Bakery until it burned down during World War II ; these schools included: Columbian High School (grades 9-12) built 1907; Mechanic Institute school opened 1915; both closed 1951 . One notable event that occurred during this time period is documented below A three story brick building located on West 4th Street between Elmira Road and Interstate 44 southbound used as an air raid shelter during World War II which according to some reports remained standing up until recently although most likely destroyed over time due to vandalism or neglect up until recent years since it has not been visited by historians or residents since then . After World War II other basic needs such as housing began becoming available so civic organizations like Lions Club organized themselves into committees responsible for acquiring land parcels suitable for development which eventually led to annexation of surrounding townships into Beirut Township effective January 1st 1959 Lebanese Community Development Corporation formed circa 1978 provides services such as water main replacement, street repairs etcetera allowing growth within boundaries without having undue impact on neighboring communities thereby facilitating trade visits etcetera thus bringing economic vitality & opportunity Integration into larger society has proceeded gradually over past few decades resulting Growth Rates reaching 100% estimated population residing therein today As mentioned earlier approximately 1800 people lived here before European explorers discovered this area but due mostlyto Indian Wars & Removal operations many left or relocated sometime after 1790 AD Mexican losses forced Comanche leader Cheyenne Nation chief Quanah Parker onto Kansas side nearby Clearwater River so he could build new village unlike French explorer Sieur de La Salle who claimed all present day Texas region back then & founded Fort Worth – Arlington Heights–Beaumont TX 16 Oct 1792 SW 3” N 75° W
