Lebanon, Missouri is a small town in Osage County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield metropolitan area. The town is named after Lebanese refugees who immigrated to the U.S., and it began as a farming village before becoming a rural community. The town was founded in 1881 by Englishmen who had come overland from Belfast, Northern Ireland. By 1901, the population had grown to around 100 people and the name was changed to Lebanon for practical reasons; there were only two buildings in Lebanon then that were not used for agriculture or storage. There are several stories about how the name came about: one story has it that John Smedley, president of Hannibal Bridge & Iron Co., which built much of Lebanon's infrastructure, called upon his friend and business associate George Washington Carver (1863-1941) to suggest changing the name because "the land hereabouts looks like Beirut." Another story has it that Gertrude Chandler would visit her friends at their farmhouse every afternoon during prohibition and offer them lemonade if they would call her "Lebanon" instead of "Pineapple Springs." In 1954, when Lebanon became an unincorporated community within Osage County again following its incorporation into Stroudsburg Township on November 2nd of that year,[1] residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of annexing neighboring Springdale Township into their municipality with a view toward creating what they perceived as a more cohesive community based on common interests such as education and commerce.[2][3] However annexation did not take place until 1959 when both towns seceded from Osage County due to disagreements over local taxation rates. Lebanon, Missouri is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Micropolitan Statistical Area. Lebanon was established in 1864 as a post office called Bellevue. It was renamed Bellevue Springs in 1875 and then Lebanon in 1902. The first store in Lebanon opened in 1903. The Bellevue-Lebanon School District was founded in 1907 and annexation of neighboring towns by it created Lebanon Township on December 12, 1912. On January 1, 1923, the school district became an all-volunteer township with a single trustee who served for life and whose term expired at the next election; he had been appointed by the state board of education from among its members. On February 24, 1924 local residents staged a one-day general strike to protest high prices prevailing on village stores due to overproduction caused by World War I munitions purchases; this event is also considered to be the beginning of organized labor in Lebanon Township. In 1928 voters passed an ordinance creating a zoning ordinance regulating land use which remains effective today
