A post office called Lebanon was established in 1837, and remained in operation until 1906. The town site was selected from a group of volunteer towns that formed when entrepreneurs organized a state agricultural extension service under the leadership of James Kiefer (1811-1887). Kiefer had immigrated to America as an infant and worked his way up through various mercantile pursuits including land holdings in Illinois before joining with others to form the first Farmers' National Bankroll Company west of the Mississippi River on July 4th, 1836 – one of 12 banks founded during the Panic of 1837 which led to Ulysses S. Grant's Banking Act composed by Repository Committee chairman Nicholas Biddle that created national bank regulation In 1860s residents began purchasing parcels along Interstate 44 becoming known as "The Beltway". The incorporation date for Lebanon proper as well as much of neighboring Park Heights dates back to 1902 when two businessmen - Hosea Gardner Holland (1858-1932) and Averill Harriman (1858-1934) - purchased 8 acres north of current day Olive Branch Road east of I-44 for $40 per acre including water rights On October 20th 1902 voters passed a referendum creating a city charter with Borough President John Fenton serving as mayor with Joseph Pappas (D), Augustus Weiser (I), Harry Wimbish (C), Charles Ladd (1st Viscount Ladd) serving on council members Todd Bealworth(R), Edwin Dudley(D), Homer Hite(I) and Everett Cope(R). At its incorporation date July 1st 1903 Beirut boasted a population numbering only 605 individuals but growth continued apace due largely to benevolent donations from prominent citizens such as oilman Edward Doheny Jr., insurance executive Harry Hayden III., physician George Goucher Sr., dentist Thomas Edison & Sons Ltd., banker Eben Alger & Bros., Monsanto Chemical Co., Dodge Rubber Steamship Co.. By 1910 Beirut had over 25 businesses employing nearly 100 workers along Olive Branch Road providing services such as printing press, machine shops, meat packing plants etc.. With increasing numbers came increased development expenses necessitating annexation by nearby Park Heights which attained city status on December 5th 1912 . As Lebanese Americans increasingly prospered their Christmas trees adorned Main Street today’s commercial district sprang up quickly filling many storefronts vacated by Lebanese businesses moving into newly acquired buildings erected during subsequent annexation process . From 1915 thru 1940 almost all Lebanese immigrants living within rifle range served actively or passively duty in World War I or World War II rendering invaluable assistance both locally and nationally .....
