Lebanon, Missouri is a small town located in Dunkirk Township, Will County, Missouri. The population was 805 at the 2000 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Lebanon was founded in 1853 by parents who moved from Alexandria, Virginia to a farm near Lebanon on the banks of the Mississippi River. The name came from Mount Lebanon, a hill in that community which was sacred to Quakers and whose summit commanded a view of what is now downtown St. Louis. In 1881, when Lebanon became an incorporated town it had 7 residents and 1 post office; its population growth has been steady since then- averaging around 100 per year until rapid population growth during the 1990s caused an overall decrease in inhabitants (from 910 to 775). The first permanent settler in what would become Lebanon was John Doe and his family (including wife Sarah Jane) who arrived in 1854 after traveling through Illinois and Indiana on their way home from religious meetings at Yorktown Heights (now Lexington), Kentucky. For many years prior to this date there were occasional transient settlers as families took up land hereabouts due to various factors such as floods or other natural disasters which may have occurred every few years or so; however, these days there are only a handful of people living permanently in Lebanon proper- all of whom are descendants of those original pioneers including John Doe’s son William Fenton who currently resides there with his wife Betty (born 1901).
