Lebanon, Missouri is an unincorporated community in Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. It lies on the eastern edge of the county, just east of the Arkansas River. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1847 by brothers John and George Washington Lyon as a station on the Illinois Central Railroad. It became a small village after it was moved to Buchanan County in 1872. The post office closed in 1903 and all businesses were destroyed by a fire in 1901. Lebanon is named for Colonel James Fenton Lebanon (1819-1897). He served with distinction as colonel of volunteers during the Mexican–American War and later as governor of Iowa Territory. In 1868 he married Julia Atherton; they had six children.

Lebanon, Missouri was founded in 1836 and is located in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The community straddles the border of Arkansas and Louisiana. At its peak, Lebanon had a population of over 1,500 residents. Today, Lebanese settlers make up only a small percentage of the population and the town has lost most of its commercial and industrial importance. A significant event in Lebanon's history is the Battle of Brownwood on October 25, 1862 which resulted in Confederate General Braxton Bragg's surrender at that location. Prior to this battle, Bragg had unsuccessfully attempted tocross into Kansas Territory from Arkansas to join forces with General John Fenton Sherman during his Invasion of Missouri campaign into southern Illinois. In honor of this event, nearby Lamar University erected a monument to Confederate Gen-eral Braxton Bragg at Brownwood Battlefield National Cemetery. The town also hosted Solitude Conference on July 4th-6th 1865 which led to the formation of The Knights Templar Order United States District Grand Lodge #5477 A few years ago when I visited my old high school classmate Captian Ephraim Hogue who was living in Texas then I asked him about it he said "I didn't know there was such an organization as that back then" He was right! There wasn't! It wasn't until many years later when I met Captian Hogue's grandson who told me all about it while we were dining at his place one evening
