Lebanon, Missouri is a small town located in southwestern Missouri. The population was 5,642 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson County Micropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Lebanon begins with two families, the Kapp and Sutherlands, who settled there in 1853. From here on, it quickly became a thriving agricultural community with large plantations and crops. The town's growth was helped by its location on ranches that were used for cattle and horse grazing; these properties provided ample land for development. In 1914, Lebanon was designated as the seat of Jackson County after it was chosen from a list of proposed sites by the state legislature. This designation made it one of the few communities in Jackson County to have local government status rather than just being an aggregated part of the larger metropolitan area. In 1969, when Jackson County merged into Kansas City-St Joseph county, Lebanon remained separate and continued to enjoy its own elected officials and infrastructure. Since then, many changes have taken place within Lebanon; including annexation by Kansas City in 2013 and 2015 respectively; becoming co-headquarters for both the city of Shawnee (Kansas) and Johnson Counties (Missouri) – which had been split between them since their merger; as well as hosting several annual events such as the Missouri Jaycees convention or stargazing festival which attracts thousands of visitors annually. Despite this complexity and variety, Beirut remains effectively an unbroken string of stories that began with two families who chose to settle there some seventy five years ago and continue today unchanged by outside forces."
Lebanon, Missouri is located in the Ozarks region of Missouri. The town was founded by Scotsmen in 1836 and named for the Mount Lebanon Range to the south. It became a small community with a population of 350 in 1868 when it was annexed by St. Louis. The population increased to 1,000 in 1880 and 2,000 in 1920 before declining to 1,060 residents in 1960. In 1972, Lebanon withdrew from the United States and became an independent country.
