Lake St. Louis is a small, but beautiful, urban lake located in the city of St. Louis, Missouri. The water surface area is just over 10 acres and it spans two blocks of shoreline. The body of water was formed by ancient underground lakes that were cut off from the main body of water by hills and mountains. Today, the name Lake St. Louis comes from its location on the southern border of what is now St. Louis County and Jefferson County in Illinois. The name stuck and when Saint Louis was founded in 1806 people called it Lake Frontenac because Frontenac had been masterbuilder for the new town on the east side of the river (now downtown). In 1817 a group of American merchants bought land near present day University City on which they built a college called Transylvania University (established 1819). When Springfield became an incorporated town in 1835, they decided to call their new municipal center "St.Louis" so as not to duplicate Transylvania University's name (which already carried some regional implications). In 1862 President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 9665 establishing three military districts within Missouri: one centered around Fort Lee on the Potomac River; another around Springfield; and another around Shreveport for service duringthe American Civil War as well as for control over Indian reservations west of Arkansas River (the Red River Confederacy). This order created quite a stir among local residents because soldiers could only reside within rifle ranges set up by military installations across Missouri! As result, many homespun jokes about "Nigger Corpses quartered at Whitefish Bay" circulated throughout relocated households during Reconstruction years following World War II... Lake St. Louis is a large and shallow body of water located in the Midwestern United States. It was named for Saint Louis, which at the time was an independent city on the opposite side of the Mississippi River. The first white inhabitants of what is now Lake St. Louis were French colonists who built Fort de Chartres on its southern shore in 1664. In 1812, General James Hogg's cavalry unit attacked and burned down Fort Donelson after losing a battle with Native Americans in Missouri River valley near present-day Springfield, Missouri. The area that is now Lake St.Louis was part of Mexico until 1821 when it became part of the United States as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The treaty ended Mexican–American War (1846-48). As a result, Missouri became one ofthe U.S.–Mexico border states and lost its status as a slave state; this event is also known as the Compromise Of 1860. The area around present-day Lake St.Louis was surveyed by Captain Pierre Laclède in 1768 and named for Jean Baptiste Laclède, Sieur de la Salle, who explored it during his Voyage des Indes Orientales (1765-67). In 1824, Governor Nicholas Biddle passed Act No 2 propelling Jefferson County into being from portions west of Memphis to eastof Harper's Ferry Creek which had been organized as Knox County under Governor Jeremiah Dixon two years earlier .The act designated what are now primarily parts of homeownerstown and gated communities northwestof I-44 (including many homes built since 1978) as "Lake St."Lansing Township includes most or all these areas southandwestof I- 44 becoming their official name following enactment by mapmaker John Blair Lewis on February 22nd 1830 after he hadredrawn maps depicting federal land grants made to various eastern counties since Louisiana Purchase in 1803 .It should be noted that Act No 2 did not include any portion or neighborhoods eastof I-44
