Lake St. Louis is a large, artificial body of water located in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. Lake St. Louis was the site of a great battle between Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The battle took place on July 4, 1862, in what is now Missouri. Grant decided to attack instead of retreating after learning that his own flank was unprotected. However, Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered his army to retreat and then ambush Grant's force as it crossed a river called Big Blue River near Corinth, Illinois.
