Lake St. Louis, Missouri is a large body of water located in eastern Missouri, near the Kansas and Oklahoma borders. The name comes from French, as it was named for SaintLouis de Montfort (also known as Louis IX), who was the Archbishop of Reims in France at the time. It is now an incorporated city in St. Louis County, Missouri. The population of Lake St. Louis was estimated to be over 630,000 people in 2010,[1] making it one of the most populous cities in Missouri.[2] The first Europeans to visit what is now Lake St.Louis were fur traders working for the French crown during the 16th century. Jesuit missionaries arrived here during the 18th century and founded a mission complex that remains active today: Sacred Heart Catholic Mission School and Seminary, which provides education for children from pre-Kindergarten through college level; Holy Cross Catholic Church and Chapel; and Blessed Sacrament Parish Groundhouse - all located on or around what is now Main Street - between 1763 and 1824. In 1840, when oil became available here from wells drilled under this area by John Dardanelles, industrialization began with businesses such as Armour Mfg., Alcoa Aluminum Company (now Alpha Natural Resources), Wabash Coal Company (now FirstEnergy) and others starting up around town to extract petroleum from these new sources of energy. By 1960s development had spearheaded growth once again with homebuilding continuing to be an important industry while professional services gained prominence thanks to arrivals such as PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC), Microsoft Corporation (MICROSOFT) and other technology giants like Dell Incorporated (DELL). Today, many downtown businesses still operate out of buildings dating back to those days such as Armour Mfg.'s original building on Main Street/Dardanelles Boulevard which still stands today despite multiple renovations throughout its history including a fire that destroyed it in 1998; PwC's original main office building also extant on North Avenue since 1907; MICROSOFT's old computer lab building locally known simply as "The Lab" still standing after several remodels starting in the late 1990s until being completely renovated within view of downtown residents beginning in 2016;[3][4][5] however some newer buildings have replaced older ones throughout recent decades including MOVE'S Germantown studiospace redevelopment project completed last year adjacent to IMAX theater component plaza just east of Interstate 35W on Page Road across from Rheingold Brewery Headquarters[6]; major renovation projects are currently underway at Hennepin County Library District's Central Branch located Downtown comprising $150 million project due for completion by 2021[7], 2ndBank Tower currently under construction next door across I-35W & Maple Streets adjacent to the Phillips Arena multi-use facility slated for completion later this decade[8], [9]and plans are underway for yet another new highrise development - One Republic Tower - set to rise along I-70 just south of Lambert Coliseum soon[10].

Lake St. Louis was a natural reservoir created by the joining of two streams, the Pee Dee River and the Mississippi River. The name, which means "plain of the Saint Clair," comes from an early French explorer who named it in honor of Venerable Jean-Baptiste de la Salle. The area that now comprises Lake St. Louis was first settled by Native Americans in about 1800. By 1812, Europeans had arrived to what is now Missouri and began exploring its interior for fur-trading opportunities and land grants. In 1816, the United States Congress designated the area around this natural basin as part of the Louisiana Purchase from France, making it part of America. The first white settlements in what is now Illinois came about during this time period when traders discovered a site where Wabash River meets the Mississippi River near present day Springfield, Illinois. Many Irish immigrants also moved west during this time and founded businesses and farms in what is today Illinois and Missouri. In 1821, Lewisand Clark explored these parts of America for Congress on their way to explore Canada; they named their new exploration region "Missouri" after General James Kossuth's home state of Hungary (nowKansas). This naming helped solidify American control over this territory while at the same time helping Britain gain influence over central North America through its ceded lands in return for independence from Spain! In 1824, President James Kossuth made a donation to build a dam on the north side of present day Lake St.Louis so that water could be diverted southward for irrigation purposes within present day Arkansas County (now Jefferson County) in Missouri – fulfilling another gift from Kossuth to America! This dam would become one ofAmerica's most important infrastructure projects with an impact on both local economy and national politics! Over time, more people migrated into what is now Missouri – some settling along traditional Indian trade routes while others coming via newly built trails such as those linking Oregon Country with Mexico City; or following religious groups such as Methodists who journeyed downriver to join other missionaries at Cahokia (present day Hennepin County). As development increased along existing trade routes and riverside communities grew up around these centers of activity there was also more conflict between newcomers and indigenous populations over access to resources, land use rights, education opportunities etc., often resulting into violence or displacement. In 1830–31 General Winfield Scott invaded northeastern Kansas Territory seeking recognition for his own Ulysses S Grant's military campaigns against Mexican forces throughout Texas (then controlled by Mexico) since 1828; he reached Missouri just before winter broke out there following his march across Nebraska Territory which he called "The Great March." After crossing into Kentucky Territory on December 15th 1830 he halted at Pittsburg Landing on December 17th near Present Day Springfield under cover of darkness ordering General John Custer not to fire upon friendly Indians living nearby because they were friendly hosts! 2 years later Colonel Oliver Wolcott captured Little Big Horn then marched it allthe way back east across Kansas Territories bypassing Nebraska Territory altogether due to heavy snowstorms trying get supplies east rather than fight Mexican forces - thus becoming known as The Great Northern Expedition! During 1840s many slaves were brought over from Africa via boatloads aboard American ships sailing upriver towards Saint Louis via Memphis Tennessee until their sale off at points downstream along Illinois & Iowa Rivers etc .. Slavery continued unabated here despite efforts by slaveowners/owners' families/friends/allies/enemies variously termed 'abolitionists', 'independents', ' constitutionalists ', ' Whigs ', ' Tories ', Seasons passed with little change although Africans working here gradually died out leaving only free black men behind ..Many freed blacks started families here but economic conditions soon deteriorated leading many eventually returned backto Africa .. Returned black men gradually assimilated into African culture starting with very few carrying any residual white European DNA .Today considerable AfricanAmerican community exists in Pullman Township adjoining downtown StLouis
