After three days of hard fighting General Wayne emerged victorious; he killed or captured more than 100 Cheyenne chiefs and took many scalps during the engagement” (New York Times). In 1865, after American Civil War ended with Union victory over Confederate forces around Cairo,[1] General Andrew Johnson moved United States troops from Springfield Armory eastward along Pulaski Street to take up positions around Harrisonburg Barracks (now Harrisonburg National Military Park) near downtown SaintLouisville where they remained until 1971 when they were withdrawn to Rock Island Arsenal

Lake St. Louis is an open-water body located in the state of Missouri, in the Midwestern United States. It is a reservoir formed by the overflow of two small rivers, the White and Blue Rivers. The body was named for General James K. Polk, who had led American forces during the Mexican-American War and who would become president in 1845. The first settlement at Lake St. Louis was made by Father Gabriel Richard de Laclotte on March 7, 1788, as part of a Jesuit mission to the Shawnee tribe of Indians living east of present day Memphis, Tennessee. In 1800, Pierre Charles Lescot built a small town near what is now Park Heights on the north shore of Lake St. Louis proper; this community became known as Lescotstown after him. The city of St. Louis was founded on May 6, 1827 by Captain John Sully and Major George Meade at what is now North Park Heights; it soon outgrew its original bounds and became one of America's largest cities with a population over one million people by 1840 (it would reach its current size by 1870). In 1813, General James K. Polk disembarked his warships at Pier 9 on the south side of lake to make his way upriver to Mexico City through ancient canals which he believed were still operational; he may have been inspired by reports that some strange creatures had been sighted near this location over several months previous (the so-called "Fool's Canal"). On October 8–9th, 1813 Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Duryea discovered an artificial island situated about 3 miles due south from where General Polk had landed—this discovery provided evidence that canals still operated beneath Lake SaintLouis Some time between 1814 and 1820 several other vessels were discovered moored around or within range of Pointe du Gard: these include USS Constitution (1815), USS Enterprise (1816), HMS Beagle (1820), HMS Discovery (1821) & HMS Sandwich (1822). This activity likely accounted for much speculation surroundingGeneral Polk's passage through those waters anyhow In 1865 Independence Day ceremonies were held at Pier 9 to commemorate events leading up to that date including General John Atherton's failed attempt to purchase land from France near present day Liberty Bridge; also included among those in attendance was President Abraham Lincoln who addressed a crowd gathered thereabouts prior to boarding an evening train back home across Illinois' border with Kentucky In 1907 Grand Rapids banker Gurney Carrington donated $50,-000 towards construction project for new dam across White River on site then occupied by Bellefontaine farmstead On July 12th 1922 four automobiles collided while approaching US 62 bridge over White River just west thereof causing both vehicles& persons therein considerable damage After years long planning & anticipation work beganvmieriagust 4th 1936 finished w/o incident

Lake St. Louis was founded in 1836 by the Missouri River as a transportation and trade center for goods traveled down the Mississippi River. The city grew rapidly during the 1840s, thanks to its location on the navigable river and its access to goods brought down by steamboats. In 1864, when Union General Ulysses S. Grant threatened to surrender all of Missouri to Confederate General Robert E. Lee, Lake St. Louis residents courageously defended their town with firefights that lasted days. The town was finally captured on July 9, 1864, becoming one of the military objectives of Union General Philip Sheridan'sraid across Missouri that summer. The city declined during Reconstruction following the Civil War, but recovered slowly in the late 19th century thanks to a series of construction projects such as the completion of Interstate 70 in 1964 and renovation of downtown streetscape in 1998. Today, Lake St. Louis is an important cultural and commercial center in northwestern Missouri and is home to several large employers including Monsanto Company and Peabody Energy Corporation
