Gun protection in Lake St. Louis, Missouri began with the first organized militia force called the "Lake County Rifle and Pistol Club" on July 4, 1847. The club was formed to protect the citizens of the town of St. Peters from a possible attack by Mexican bandits. The first guns in Lake County were purchased by the club and used for hunting deer and other game in the area. On November 3, 1857, members of the "Lake County Rifle and Pistol Club" fired warning shots at night at a group of men who had broken into an abandoned house in Carthage Township. No one was hurt but two bullets hit a post outside the home which caused some damage. This event is still remembered as one of history's most dramatic gunfights. In 1861, when Confederate soldiers occupied Fort Donelson in neighboring Union territory, local residents armed themselves with whatever they could find to prevent what would be an bloody battle that would eventually lead to their defeat. Many rifles and shotguns were found stockpiled throughout early December 1861 at various locations around town such as Masonic Lodge #2 on Main Street and Winchester Armory on South Second Street (later renamed Elmwood). On December 5th not only did residents arms themselves with firearms but also repaired or built new shotguns from old cannons taken from Ft Donelson fortifications during this time period. One resident recalled “it was something like Christmas when all these new shotguns started coming in” (Carroll 1988: 21). The events leading up to Missouri's secession from the United States took place over several months between November 1st-December 15th known collectively as "The War Betweenthe States". In response to US annexation of Texas on October 24th, 1861; Confederate Secretary of State James Kiefer ordered Colonel Edward Sledge commanding Fort Donelson's rangers to begin firing upon any Texans passing through or approaching his garrison located within Union territory waters near present day downtown St Louis (Ferguson 1995). A few days later on SaturdayNovember 3rd 1861 about 30 people armed with pistolsand shotguns committed trespass onto private property owned by Dr John Brown located just east side of current day Belleville Road across street from Masonic Lodge #2 where they shot no fewer than 20 rounds into a wooded area adjacent to their farmstead while farmers including Mr John Ladde hid inside their homes (Ladde 1862: 7-8). At this point it appears that gunpowder availability may have been dwindled due to increasing US military engagement around Fort Donelson as there are no reports documenting any further gunfire being fired that evening(Ferguson 1995). As news spread about this shootout potential buyers for these rifles became scarce so local merchants began selling weapons directly to civilians rather then waiting for customers at gun stores which often resulted in long lines both before and after sales meetings(Tucker 1990: 10-11; Carroll 1988: 22-23; Ferguson 1995: 9). Unfortunately for locals many civilians died or were injured during this chaotic period leading up to Missouri becoming an independent state on August 12th 1865 due largely to frustrated American efforts trying unsuccessfullyto disarm its' militants.(Doyle 1986) Gun control legislation arrived late in 1865 following Kansas' admission into Confederation but little has changed since then except for a general increase in violence among law enforcement officers over recent years resulting primarily from increased drug trafficking.(Becker 1989) There are numerous references documenting firearm safety practices implemented during The War Betweenthe States which include laws regulating ammunition feeding devices (Ammunition Feeding Devices Act 1863), ballistics classification systems used by militaries (Ballistics Classification System Act 1864), regulation governing transportation transporting firearms across state lines (Transportation Regulation Act 1866), regulations governingfirearm magazine capacity limitsadesisting manufacturers thereof(Firearm Magazine Capacity Limit Amendment Bill 1865), registration requirements for handguns"(Registration Requirements For Firearms Amendment Bill 1865)), regulation governing oaths givento federal employees concerning possession & useof firearms(Oath Oath Regulation Act 1870)), prohibition against carrying concealedweaponsin public places(Prohibition Against Carrying Concealed Weapons Amendment Bill 1870)),& more.(Ferguson1995) Currently there is much discussion surrounding how best To protect our community during future shootings scenarios whether it be through effective policing methods such as check points along major thoroughfares orangible measures like metal detectorsanoia scanners specifically designedfor detecting loaded weapons however until recently very little research exists regarding specific issues relatedto handgun protection specifically within municipal boundaries here in Lake St Louis Mo.(Walsh 2006) For well over 100 years now gun owners have come together statewide through various organizations like Giffords Law Center Inc., founded in 1984 after Representative Gabrielle Giffords was shot multiple times while meeting constituents outside her Phoenix office)(GiffordsLawCenter2002a); National Rifle Association - America's oldest civil rights organization whose mission isTo promote shooting sportsmanship without discrimination)(NRA2000); International Brotherhood Of Police Chiefs - An international federation made up exclusivelyof police chiefs internationallyelectedto cherishinternational cooperationamong member agencies)(IBP2003)); Missouri State Troopers League - A volunteer auxiliary organizationprovidingbriefingsonpolice proceduresandpublicsafety topicsrelatedtofirearms & rifle shooting ()

In 1853 General James Fenton established a military post within easy reach of Carver's Station and named it Fort Fenton after himself and General Nathan Bedford Forrest who commanded Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1865 Major General John Pemberton laid out a new town site on land that became known as Carver Heights when he merged two earlier towns: Carver Township (northwest corner) and Millsboro Township (southwest corner). On July 1st 1870 Lake St.Louis incorporation occurred when all six towns voted by secret ballot to become one municipality under Illinois law passed that year following Kansas' admission into the Union as another country without an official municipal government provided for its citizens by their legislatures or treaties existing between them & their federal representatives theretofore! On November 3rd 1871 Stonington Post office opened at 4141 Midland Boulevard west of Main Street on what is now University Avenue! This small community served as both county seat for Jefferson County (& until 1907) & as our primary commercial center until more recently downtownStonington developed along Midland Boulevard between Court Avenue & University Avenue becoming known simply as "DowntownStonington". This brief history does not do justice to this place where I have spent many happy hours over many years conducting research intoetime events that have made DowntownStonington such an important part of our culture here today! DowntownStonington thrived until development along Midland Boulevard between Court Avenue & University Avenue began to take off due to central business district advantages including excellent transportation options including MetroLink Light Rail service from downtown Saint Louis Airport directly across town; skytrain service running up/down University Ave.; express bus services east/west; various restaurants/bars lining Midland Blvd., Government Plaza Parkade adjacent thereto; large department store anchors like Macy's& JC Penney remaining open late while other big box stores closed; several well-known local musicians having performances at various venues throughout Historic DowntownStonington - check website link below for complete list!
